Pradipto Sengupta and the Mandolin Soundtrack of an Era

Early Life and Training

Born into a musical Bengali family in Kolkata, Pradipto Sengupta began his mandolin journey under Shri Subhash Pal (All India Radio) and later trained with maestro Shri Saroj Barua. By the early 1980s, Pradipto was a prominent member of the Kolkata Cine Musicians Association, lauded for blending Indian and Western classical styles with finesse.

Founded in 2004 to revive riverbank traditions, the group gained acclaim after performing in Japan and launching India’s first band using exclusively bamboo-crafted instruments. Led by dynamic artists like Kuttan Arangod and Pradeep K.V.Vayali blends folk heritage with modern rhythms, performing across India and abroad with an ensemble of over 25 unique bamboo instruments, and celebrating nature as the essence of culture.

IPRS Foundation Day Celebrated Through KOLAB 2025 Indo-Canadian Music Collaboration

The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS), in partnership with SOCAN (The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) and SOCAN Foundation, proudly announces the third edition of KOLAB, its flagship cross-border songwriting initiative. Building on the success of the Indo-Korean edition, this year’s program brings together 15 Indian and 8 Canadian music creators for a week-long songwriting residency from August 23rd to 29th, 2025 at The True School of Music, Vijay Bhoomi University Campus, Karjat.
