Brinda Miller is a noted Indian contemporary artist known for her vibrant abstract works and dynamic use of color and texture. She has been closely associated with the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival for nearly 25 years and is one of its key guiding forces. Beginning as a volunteer, she played an instrumental role in shaping the festival into one of India’s largest multidisciplinary cultural events. She contributed to its financial planning, sponsorship outreach, and curatorial direction, while preserving its non-commercial, inclusive ethos. Her leadership helped transform the festival into a major public celebration of art and culture in Mumbai

 

My Amazzingg Geaarr

Swarathma, one of India’s leading Folk/Fusion band has long drawn inspiration from India’s folk and tribal traditions, going beyond influence to build meaningful collaborations with indigenous musicians across the country. Through projects such as Rhythms of the Earth with the Tata Steel Foundation, the band has worked closely with tribal artists—mentoring groups, recording rare instruments, and sharing the stage in powerful collective performances.

There are various forms of literature—including the short story, novel, essay, and poem—that dictate the use of language, thought, and convention associated with each. These same conventions suffuse every art form, including music—both vocal and instrumental.

Vocal music, given today’s performing customs, can be broadly classified into twelve known categories or genres. These are: Dhrupad, Dhamar, Langda Dhrupad, Sadra, Khayal, Khayal-numa, Trivat, Ras, Chaturang, Tarana, Ashtapadi, Sargam Geet, and Tap Khayal.

Q Black Sapphire is a very interesting name. How did you decide on the name?

A The name Black Sapphire comes from our favorite color black and our attraction to  the positive vibes emanating from the sapphire stone.  Before coming together as Black Sapphire band in 2021 we were independent artists. I and my sister Ancy were performing solo and duo acts for over a decade. Ancy, now, is the lead vocalist in our band. Black Sapphire essentially came together after the pandemic. This was because there was much demand for music bands for weddings. It was also time to get into the circuit because we had by then recorded four independent works.
