Special Feature: Mental Wellness during Pandemic

Dealing with mental health issues positively during the lockdown

These are challenging times for the Indian music industry and especially the artists, composers, lyricists, and musicians. Albums have been put on a delay or indefinite hold. There are limited revenue resources to explore during this pandemic due to which musicians can be more susceptible to depression, addictions, and even suicidal thoughts. The importance of the mental well-being of musicians needs to be looked after now, more so than ever.

The main source of revenue generation for most artists are live events and concerts, which are not being organized for the time being. Working from home is not the same as being on the stage or the studio. A music professional’s life is based on public appreciation and one would not prefer to interact with his audience or fellow professionals through a screen.

Musicians are used to traveling in groups but are now locked down in their houses. With no solutions foreseeable, worrying about how to put food on the table is a concern for most.

When someone’s livelihood is threatened, then the resulting anxiety is perfectly understandable. Musicians are humans replete with emotions similar to all. Social distancing and lock-downs, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, have resulted in people suffering from behavioural changes. The pandemic is triggering a lot of doubt and insecurities, but the same can be dealt with as well.

This is where music can help in elevating the mood. Many Indian classical ragas and western compositions are played or heard to ease mental stress. Music, through its various genres, can physically and mentally uplift people in multiple ways. Maybe listen to a genre that you outgrew or lost track of. Listen to what the millennials do for a change.

Some basic routines can aid us during this troubling time.

  1. Take some time out every day to connect with people who are supportive and positive. We are social creatures so it’s important to find ways to talk to others even while social distancing.

  2. If you are experiencing anxiety, breathing exercises can be helpful.

  3. Put one hand on your chest, the other hand on your lower belly, and close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose, hold for five counts, and breathe out through your mouth. Repeat as necessary.

  4. Exercising is a great way to refocus your energy. It also helps in taking advantage of the mental and physical benefits. There are thousands of free workout videos on YouTube and several workout apps are offering free trials right now. It’s also a good excuse to get outside and go for a walk or jog.

  5. Social media is a great way to connect with people while keeping social distance, but it’s easy to overdo. There’s a fine line between staying informed and bogging yourself down in posts and articles that might make you sad. Try using social media to connect with others by sharing, commenting, and liking, as opposed to passively scrolling.

  6. Find Creative Ways to Make Money

  7. Many musicians are performing live on Facebook, Instagram, or even Zoom concerts in place of cancelled shows. Selling your merchandise, music, or conducting tutorials can also help economically.

  8. While we still await a pandemic-free world, we need to keep listening to music, keep ourgood vibes going, and release those endorphins!
