If Punjabi music, is now an independent genre, the song that created the greatest splash early on and gave it the wings to soar from the confines of Punjab to the national and the international arena was the 1980 runaway hit by the iconic Punjabi entertainer Gurdas Maan.
Launched on good old Doordarshan on 31st Dec 1980, the fun track immediately caught the imagination of music fans. Such was its popular demand that it rocketed to superstardom a new evergreen superstar Gurdas Maan. The song, also referred to it as the first Punjabi Rap song was later included in the album of the same name in 1981. Chhalla and Mamla Gadbad Hai were the other hits from the collection. Mann has since risen to cult status penning over 300 songs but “Dil Da Mamla Hain” remains his and the music fans fondest memory. It was also the precursor to the droves of Punjabi musicians ruling the charts today. And why not? After all, “Dil Da Mamla Hain”
