IPRS MUSIC DAY

IPRS Music Day was an insightful workshop organized by IPRS in collaboration with Meta. The event was live-cast on IPRS’ Facebook and Instagram pages from the Meta Studio in Mumbai, making it available to IPRS members, independent artists, music creators, and aspiring musicians from all across.

The workshop raised awareness about the nuances of music copyright on digital platforms and how music creators, publishers, and independent artists can use Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram to promote music and connect with fans. The workshop had individual segments covering topics on music copyright and managing creators’ rights on social media, using social media for promotion, community building, and how to earn more from the music made. The audience gathered valuable tips from the expert speakers Mr. Atul Churamani, an industry veteran and MD of Turnkey Music, and Kabir Chandra, Head Music Partnerships – India, Meta, as they shared helpful information and required know-how.

The workshop also included an experience-sharing session with leading and popular creators Salim Merchant, Yashraj Mukhate, and Anatara Nandy, who shared their journey as creators, the art of songwriting, and how to make music big through the power of digital and social media.

We thank the Meta team and all our esteemed speakers for coming together to make this happen.

IPR DAY @ IPRS

The widespread use and easy accessibility of music have made it increasingly important for music creators to understand the scope of Intellectual Property Rights and their role in protecting the rights of authors, composers, and the owners of musical works.

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to intangible creations of the human mind, such as inventions, literary, artistic, and musical works, designs, symbols, names, and images used in commerce. For creators, IP is crucial as it protects their innovative works from being copied or stolen by others, thus ensuring they can reap the benefits of their hard work and creativity.

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually on April 26th to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights and their role in encouraging innovation and creativity. The theme this year was “Women and IP: Innovation, Creativity, and Empowerment.” This theme highlights the critical contributions that women make to the field of intellectual property and emphasizes the need to promote gender equality in innovation and creativity.

As a music copyright society, IPRS recognizes the importance of protecting intellectual property rights in the music industry.

On the occasion of Intellectual Property Rights Day on 26th April, IPRS conducted two live sessions to boost understanding of intellectual property rights among music creators and celebrate the contribution of women creators to the industry.

The first session was a workshop on IP & Managing Rights as a Creator. The session highlighted the importance of copyright in music and how to manage rights as a music creator, publisher, and independent artist. The session was designed to help music makers understand their rights and how to protect their intellectual property by providing them with the resources and knowledge they need to protect and earn more from the music they create.

The second session was a Music Roundtable on Women in IP. The music industry has historically been gender-skewed, with women being underrepresented and facing various forms of discrimination. However, in recent years, there have been efforts to address these issues and promote gender equality in the industry.

In line with this year’s IP theme, IPRS took the opportunity to highlight IP in music with inputs and insights from female authors and composers from across the country. IPRS IPR Day Music Roundtable brought together the representatives of the IPRS Women Wing, recently inducted across its eight ARA Committees in four zones.

The IPRS Women Wing aims to identify, empower, and promote women in music, giving them the right opportunity and know-how.

The IPRS Women Wing comprising eminent female creators K. Thamarai, Ameeta Parsuram, Satarupa Sanyal, Priya Saraiya, Upali Chattopadhyay, Bidhumalini, Dhanya Suresh, and Sunaini Sharma shared their thoughts regarding the IP scenario in their regions, including the challenges, opportunities, experiences, and strategies to support and empower the next generation of women creators.

IPRS AT YOUR DOORSTEP

IPRS at Your Doorstep is an initiative by IPRS to connect with authors, composers, publishers, and the community of music makers across the country. To that end, IPRS recently organized an outreach program in Patna with regional lyricists, composers, and music publishers. IPRS aims to educate music creators and publishers about copyright in music, the role of IPRS in safeguarding their royalty rights, and new trends and technologies. The two-day workshop was an excellent opportunity for music makers and independent artists from the region to get first-hand information and guidance from the IPRS team.

Digitalization has created new opportunities in the music industry, evident from the growth of regional music. As a society keen to support those behind the music, IPRS is thus reaching out to the community of music creators and publishers in different corners, sharing knowledge and know-how crucial to protect their works and rights as a creator.

Commenting on the initiative, leading actor, music composer, director, and esteemed member of IPRS Shri Vinay Bihari said, “The Bhojpuri music industry has been touching new heights in popularity. A plethora of songs and budding talent have been making a mark. Hence, these sessions organized by IPRS will help music creators and publishers get familiar with matters related to copyright and the new ways of working in the digital era. Today it has become critical for any author, composer, or music aspirant to know about the different aspects of the music industry beyond creation”.
