Rochelle Dsouza Mental Health Day – 10th October
How can I manage performance anxiety or stage price which is affecting my ability to perform at my best?
Ans: Performance anxiety is a common problem faced by creators and performers at all stages in their careers. Most of these anxiety issues are related to fear of the audience. I would like to advise performers that getting to see the audience from a different perspective would help mitigate the anxiety. Thinking of the audience as cartoon characters or aliens or even as family members or children would be an effective way to curb the anxiety. Another ploy is to just forget the audiences and do you thing fearlessly.
Are there any techniques or strategies to overcome writers block and maintain a consistent level of creativity?
Ans: Meeting more people, doing something that you have never done ever like dancing or trekking or whatever that rows your boat is fine. Musicians can find a music writing partner get feedback and exchange ideas. You could also go back to your old scores for inspiration and spirit.
Can you help me cope with the pressure of the music industry such as competition, criticism, and demands of fame?
Ans: Self-belief is what will help in a great way to overcome this feeling. You have to understand that the very fact that you have survived in this competitive industry means you belong here. Feeling the pressure is one thing, but do not let it affect you deep down. You have to realize that you are your own competition and also your main source of inspiration at the end of it all.
Are there any mindfulness or relaxation techniques that can enhance my focus and creativity?
Ans: One such technique is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. The idea is that whenever you are overwhelmed by anxiety look around for 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you could hear, 2 things you could taste and one thing you could smell. This technique is easy to use and can be done even as you walk or when you feel upset or angry or anxious at any place.
How can I improve my self-esteem and self-confidence as a musician?
Ans: Life as a musician is tough as there are more downs than ups. There are times when you feel hopeless but please realize that nothing is impossible your decisiveness is important. There are a few other things that can help. One of which is to look back at your earlier successes and take inspiration. Remember that if you could do it then you can do it again. Look around for support and try and understand where it is that you are lacking. Take away the word impossible there is nothing impossible. If something is important it is well worth doing again.
What can I do to maintain good mental health while dealing with the ups and downs of a musician’s career including financial instability?
Ans: Look for support from your family members and friends and others who have been through this position especially the financial instability in the beginning of your career. Do not give up. Please know within yourself that everything works out if you give it a good try.
