Creators’ Corner | Interview of the Month | IPRS 2022 |
From IPRS Desk | FAQs | Stories from the Industry
Namaskar, my dear friends!
‘Khanak’ is back in your inbox after the seasonal break of a few months and I am so glad to be back!
First of all, I must thank you all for your unequivocal support to the current office-bearers and directors on the board of IPRS in recent elections. Your mandate only reaffirms our faith that good work will be recognized and given credit, sooner or later.
Speaking of credits, in 2021 our key focus was getting due credits for songwriters and we started the online movements #CreditThe Creators and #CreditDeDoYaar. These hashtags became social media rage and were so effective that at the end of the year Spotify put out hoardings with lyricist Irshad Kamil’s photograph celebrating his song ‘Shayad’ for being the most-streamed song. Friends, this has never happened before! Never was a songwriter put on a hoarding before. And while I do not want to steal Irshad bhai’s thunder, I won’t be wrong if I siphon some credit to all the creators who vociferously supported our campaign throughout the year. Because, hey, the same Spotify was missing proper credits to lyricists on their platform at the beginning of 2021. And for the same platform to dedicate a huge billboard to a songwriter – that’s a phenomenal turnaround, isn’t it?
Her grace as a voice-artist nonpareil has mesmerised us every single hour wherever we be on the planet. Her melodious renditions have won her a legion of fans but, few would be aware of an equally enchanting facet of her personality that like her singing has the distinctive stamp of timelessness. The part of her life-force veiled from the general public is her ability at crafting beautiful melodies. Few may be aware that Lata Mangeshkar was also a music composer par excellence.
For those uninitiated: Lata Mangeshkar, has composed some of the most iconic film and non-film melodies in her mother tongue Marathi. These classics have been an integral part of every Marathi music lover’s treasured collection for well over 5 to 6 decades of their release.
With close to 1000 releases in multiple music genres ranging from pop to devotional to remixes and Hindustani Bandish in a modern avatar, 9 years since rolling off, Strumm Entertainment Private Limited, T.Suresh Managing Director, features on our “Interview of the Month”. In this freewheeling chat he expounds on the evident change and developments he has been witness to in a harmonious 25 year career in the music industry including stints as Business Head of Times Music, and Managing Director Virgin Records (EMI India)
You are from an IIT IIM background, what is it that drew you to music?
I always wanted to get into entertainment. There are many like me today who are heading entertainment companies and music labels. My basic calling always was entertainment and here I am.
The music industry has significantly changed over the last couple of decades. All thanks to new technology which has redefined the different aspects of the music industry covering production, distribution, and consumption. The pandemic has catapulted the change further. Today, we are a streaming generation with music apps a click away on our smart devices.
The rapid advancement has not only impacted the way music is created and consumed, but it has also created the need to understand and protect the rights of creators in the growing digital world. Thus, leading to the growing prominence of the role of CMOs across the globe, India is no exception.
‘CMO’ stands for Collective Management Organization. A collection society that enables copyright owners and administrators to collect royalties generated by several types of use.
